The Laboratory for Infectious Diseases Research (LIDR) at the University of Missouri - Columbia campus is looking to hire a full-time Senior Research Specialist. LIDR is one of 12 Regional Biocontainment Laboratories sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and constructed in the past decade to enhance our Nation’s capacity to conduct much needed research in the fields of biodefense and emerging infectious disease.  LIDR is a stand-alone biocontainment facility which supports research at BSL3 and ABSL3.  Additionally, LIDR houses several Core facilities which provide Aerosol Biology, Immunology, and small animal model development services to researchers.

The Senior Research Specialist at the LIDR will be expected to support research at the University of Missouri through their involvement in the LIDR Core facilities.
This requires operation of complex instruments including a Beckman Coulter MoFlo XDP flow activated cell sorter, fluorescent microscopes, and inhalation exposure equipment under supervision of the Core Director, as well as the operation of additional equipment which may be acquired at a later date.  Responsibilities in small animal model development may include surgical procedures, health monitoring, and post-mortem analysis.

While it is not expected that the successful candidate will have prior experience in all aspects of the position, they must have demonstrated knowledge and motivation in learning similar complex tasks. The position also requires attention to detail necessary to work safely with high-consequence pathogens in a high-containment facility.  Some work will require use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including a respirator. All work is to be done in strict compliance with University, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
